Sergeant First Class James McKay, 51, of Cambria Heights, who was killed when a roadside bomb exploded as he was with a group that was escorting a convoy in Afghanistan just five days ago.
"A few days ago I had an opportunity to visit with Sergeant McKay's' wife Rose, family and friends and thanked them for giving the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
"McKay, joined the National Guard in 1977 he was assigned to the 101st Cavalry, in charge of reconnaissance and surveillance missions and was a highly decorated serviceman, with more than a dozen medals and commendations on his service record, including the Bronze Star, and Purple Heart - which were awarded posthumously and the New York State Defense of Liberty Medal for his work in New York City following the Sept. 11 attacks
"Today, I thank all of the men and women who choose to serve and defend the rights and freedoms of our great nation.
